Do I need a DSE workstation assessment if I work at home?

If you work from home regularly, you might be wondering whether a DSE (Display Screen Equipment) workstation assessment applies to you. The short answer is: yes, it probably does.

Many people assume DSE assessments are just for office-based roles, but the reality is that if you use a screen for work—whether it's a desktop, laptop, or tablet—for extended periods, you should have your workstation setup assessed, no matter where you're working from.

Here’s what you need to know.

What Is a DSE Assessment?

A DSE assessment is a way to make sure your workstation is set up safely and comfortably to reduce the risk of strain or injury. It looks at how you sit, how your screen and equipment are positioned, and how your working environment affects your posture and comfort.

These assessments help identify issues that can lead to:

  • Back, neck, or shoulder pain
  • Eye strain or headaches
  • Repetitive strain injuries
  • General fatigue or discomfort

Why It Matters at Home

When you're working from home, it's easy to overlook ergonomics—especially if you’re set up at the kitchen table or working from the sofa. But working in an unsuitable position day after day can take a toll on your health and productivity.

A DSE assessment can help you:

  • Set up a safer, more comfortable home workstation
  • Make the most of the furniture and equipment you already have
  • Understand simple adjustments to improve posture and reduce risk
  • Know what to request from your employer if additional equipment is needed

Is It a Legal Requirement?

Employers have a duty of care to protect the health and safety of their employees—even when they’re working remotely. That includes providing a DSE assessment for regular home workers. If you work from home full-time or several days a week, your employer should offer a DSE assessment and act on any recommendations that come from it.

What If I’m a Hybrid Worker?

If you split your time between the office and home, you still need a safe setup in both locations. A DSE assessment can help make sure you're working comfortably wherever you are.

How Do I Get One?

Start by speaking to your employer or HR team. Many organisations offer online self-assessments or virtual consultations with a DSE-trained assessor. You can often complete a checklist to highlight any issues, and then follow up with adjustments or advice as needed.  If they don't have anyone who can do it in-house, we recommend Posture People, who can provide online self assessments.  Or if you know something isn't quite right and you need an expert to have a proper look, they can carry out assessments either virtually or in-person, across the UK.

Taking the time to assess your home workstation isn’t just a tick-box exercise—it’s an important step in protecting your health and wellbeing at work. Whether you're working from a home office, kitchen table, or somewhere in between, a DSE assessment helps you work smarter and more comfortably.

Your body will thank you for it.
